As you can already tell I am obsessed with masks and will do anything to make my skin look and feel healthier.
Not everyone has heard of the Illumask and I only stumbled upon it while reading a magazine but I've heard it is huge in Korea (I am convinced every skincare regime from Korea works!). I am addicted to light therapy for your skin to treat acne, wrinkles, uneven skin tone....absolutely everything! The bad thing with this addiction is that it's very expensive and you have to go to a spa/treatment centre on a regular basis to have sessions and for up-keeping so, I was looking for a cheaper and easier approach.
The Illumask can be found at Wal-Mart (sorry my fellow Canadians we don't have this at our Wal-Mart...I had to order mine from the US) and it's only $30.00; batteries included! seriously, how can you go wrong?
So, the Illumask is an at-home LED light therapy mask which you wear on your face that has LED lights in built to it and a remote control that has 30 sessions pre-loaded on to it. It comes in two versions: one to combat wrinkles and another to combat mild to moderate acne. I don't have wrinkles or aging skin so, I tried the latter which is supposed to kill the bacteria that causes acne with blue light, and reduce inflammation with red light. I was hoping this mask could even out my skin-tone as well and maybe even diminish a few scars as blue light is very good for that.
Illumask promises results in four weeks, and that's exactly how long the mask will work, after which you throw it away. It's programmed for 30 15-minute uses. So, each day, you put on the mask, which is like a pair of glasses with a mask attached, press a button on a remote control that's connected to the mask, and let it work its magic. You can keep your eyes open during the treatment or take a quick nap for 15 mins. I didn't find the mask uncomfortable at all and while most people complain about the light in their eyes, I didn't find it irritating at all.
I always feel like I look like a Storm Trooper from Star Wars while wearing this mask and although you look hilarious I think this mask is worthwhile combined with other treatments. It's super convenient and although I got a few pimples while trying this out (which I'm not sure was caused by the mask because I was trying out other new products and my skin is very sensitive) I definitely saw my skin-tone even out. I saw that my overall condition with my skin was improving with less blackheads, less redness on my cheeks and my skin-tone was more even. I saw some amazing before and after pictures of people which I honestly didn't get as my results are more subtle. Once again my skin wasn't ideal for this products as I don't suffer from acne.
I don't believe this is a life changing product and it does not have the impact of getting LED treatments from a spa but the mask doesn't make your skin worse.
I've read in many forums that you can hack the remote and re-load it for another 30 sessions and apparently there is a YouTube video with instructions. Some people have tried it and it worked while others have said that they have re-modelled the remote so it can't be tampered. Regardless I am on the hunt for this video and you bet I'm going to try to hack the remote!
Now, I'm off to get my screwdriver! Happy Friday!
P.S. I was not paid to try this mask and neither was I sponsored to write this review....it's an honest and unbiased review :)
